In this section we will discuss the need to apply discernment in what we give our focus to, as that also determines what and where we flow our energy to. By now you should be comfortable with the importance of your thoughts and focus, as that is what determines your level of alignment, and therefore your level of empowerment in every moment. And of course you want as many of your moments as you can to be empowered , because that is how you direct your life – moment by moment.

As we’ve mentioned in the previous discussion, we want to be stable in our Inner Peace, and therefore be able to achieve and maintain our alignment irrespective of the conditions around us or in the present moment, but it does take some time and practice to refine our ability to focus on what we want to focus on, which is why we discussed the usefulness of Supportive Activities in the process; as tools that we can use to help achieve and/or maintain alignment.

When we speak here of applying discernment, it can be seen in two ways. The first is similar to the supportive activities where you are taking steps to more easily align with the Self, and in terms of being discerning, it may be to have less contact with certain people or to avoid certain gatherings or places while you are developing your skills to deliberately focus. It may also mean quitting your current job if the situation is such that you cannot find alignment where you work. Although making decisions as big as that while you are out of alignment isn’t typically recommended as you haven’t yet changed your inner world, and therefore there is a very real risk of continuing the current circumstances or conditions.

The second way in which we can apply discernment, when we have become well-versed in focusing with intention, is to maintain our alignment despite what we see, the environment that we are in and who we are conversing with. That is because you are able to maintain your thoughts (focus) to be in resonance with the thoughts of the Self. That means that you do not have to concern yourself with ensuring that you are in the right place with the right people at the right time in order to be in alignment, because you can stand firmly in your Inner Peace under all conditions.

Whether you come from a Christian background or not – there is a saying of Jesus that is very relevant to maintaining your alignment in all conditions:
“But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.” This means that you are able to apply a level of discernment to your thoughts, your focus, that you are able to still see the Self of someone who may act in a way that you do not approve of. Your perspective is one of the Integrated Self and you do not let the behaviour of another be a determining factor in the level of alignment between you and your Self. Another important insight from his words, is that you cannot fight against (resist) something or someone and still maintain the balance of your alignment. The moment that your perspective becomes the perspective of the avatar alone, you are introducing resistance, and you cannot be in resistance and be Integrated with the Self at the same time.

An example of applying discernment in what you give your attention to, may be to make a conscious decision to step away from office politics and to save your energy and be in a positive space mentally to allow you to accept where you are and to even enjoy the present moment, which helps to set up the enjoyment of the future moments. Often folks will say that they can’t avoid being in certain situations which you experience as being draining or negative, and although it is not always possible to separate ourselves physically from such environments, we can choose whether to attach with our minds to what someone is saying or doing and with time and experience it becomes easier to direct your thoughts and focus to what you intend to focus on and energise.
